How to Invest Profitably When Interest Rates are 0%
Today I have a special treat for you. Below is a guest post by my investing mentor, Jeff Nabers.
If you are frustrated by losing money on bad investments or not making the returns you need to retire, then check out Jeff’s article below.
It helped me immensely and I think it might help you too.
I just got off the phone with a man worth about $5 million, who WAS worth $8 million a few years ago.
Billions of advertising had programmed him to run around searching for investment products to buy. Lost money? Buy different investments. Lost money again? Find something new to buy.
He’s on his way to $0.00 million net worth and his grandkids won’t have their education paid for like he’d hoped.
The Big Switch
He’s been asking “What investment product should I buy?”
He’s been losing millions because it’s the wrong question.
A better question would be “How can I get my net worth up to $8 million by 2020?” (or whatever you choose your net worth goal to be)
Here’s today’s nugget…
If your questions are yielding poor results, you should invest in YOURSELF so you can ask better questions.
It’s time to look in the mirror. You have two choices:
- Say “I need better investment products to buy” – OR
- Say “I need to become a better investor”
You see, if you blame your results on bad investments there’s nothing you can do to get better investments, other than hope for a “lucky break”. It was THEIR fault (the investments) and it will keep on being their fault.
But if your money is YOUR responsibility, that changes things. If YOUR level of operating as an investor got you poor results, look to become a better investor.
How do you become a higher level of investor?
Great question, and before I answer it specifically, let me share what a higher level investor is NOT:
- A high level investor is not tied to the computer screen for hours
- A high level investor does not have twelve computer screens with market charts moving on them
- A high level investor does not revel in complexity of things like options, spreads, yields, straddles, etc
- A high level investor does not know and memorize large amounts of information
- A high level investor does not look to academia to learn about Wealth and Freedom from those who have very little of it
You see, the man I spoke with this morning had TWO financial degrees and has traded HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of stocks.
The result? He never figured out how to make money being that kind of investor—the kind he’d seen glorified in movies and magazine articles. It might be easier to find a unicorn.
In fact, Wall Street bankers seem to be jumping off tall buildings more than anything else these days (literally… have you seen the stories?)
A high level investor transitions from working for money (that’s a job) TO putting their money to work for them.
A high level investor transitions from saying “Ah crap, how in the world am I supposed to make money with these low interest rates?!” to looking beyond “financial products” to FIND 10% [or better] returns.
A high level investor is more likely to be found on a beach somewhere than behind twelve computer screens. Because when you’re money works FOR you, you may find a beach, or a forest, more enjoyable than a desk.
So…
How DO you become a higher level investor?
With the help of a mentor.
I know, I know, mentorship and apprenticeship died ages ago, right? But haven’t you noticed Academia seems to be churning out unemployed Baristas more than leaders of industry, wealthy dynamos, successful businessmen (and businesswomen) and just plain ol’ peaceful, powerful, freedom-growing individuals?
Yes, a return to the simplicity of being guided by an actual person in the real world (with real results) rather than a classroom setting.
And the classrooms are churning out loads of “financial advisors” which are really just salespeople.
If you want to spend more time away from your desk and in beautiful places, wonderful experiences, sharing the best of what life has to offer with your friends and family… then someone chained to a desk proooooobably can’t get you there.
It might SEEM like pursuing mentorship is getting knocked down a peg, depending on your age or accomplishments. That’s the kind of thinking “advisors” thrive off of. They grow your ego, yet drain your money.
There is another way and I was taught by a mentor that helped me get unlimited money and freedom.
Today, I’m writing this from the beautiful mountains of Breckenridge, CO. I have a list of 8 fun activities my wife Rachel and I are going to do this summer. (Rafting, mountain biking, eating at this fancy restaurant hidden near the top of a ski chair lift, etc)
And I CHOOSE to mentor a few clients a month because I want to. Anyone “advising” you about finances as part of making a living is like one drowning person trying to save another drowning person.
The truth is that happy “total retirement” is a myth. (Total retirement is when you’re dead) Everyone has to have a passion and purpose or else they shrivel up and die. It’s a harsh reality I’ve observed time and time again.
And it’s tough to live your passion if you must keep working for money or worry about running out of it.
I first retired in my 20s and discovered how empty “total retirement” really is. Instead I choose “Ultimate Retirement” where I live life on my own terms.
And I’m passionate about helping a few people per month improve their wealth building, whether already retired, approaching retirement, or in full blown wealth building mode.
Do you have what it takes to become a higher level investor?
I don’t know. What I do know is that if you’ve been stuck, frustrated, and overwhelmed with the wealth game in the past… and you want to add MILLIONS to your realistic wealth plan and get mentorship and handholding to implement that plan and realize your dreams…
Then we should talk. I lead by example and I take action every day to get what what I want out of life.
You should too.
If you agree, let’s talk.
Best,
Jeff
I hope you got as much out of that as I did.
Put Jeff to the test by seeing what he can do to improve your wealth plan. If you do, you’ll never look back.
Best regards,
Larry
P.S. You’ve probably seen me offer to talk to you about improving your wealth building before, right? That link takes you to a form where you have to answer some questions honestly. You may be wondering if you’re in a position where Jeff can help you. Or if true wealth and freedom is even really achievable for you in this day and age. You’ll never know unless you reach out.
