What is your Investing Purpose?
Is it your family’s future?
Is it to give you more choices?
Is it for a cause?
If you could sum up the purpose of your investments with just one word, would it be “Freedom?”
Don’t confuse things like retirement or lifestyle with purpose.
Those are just words.
It’s what you do with your retirement or lifestyle that matter.
What would you do with more Freedom?
What Inspires You?
Everyone has an investing purpose, but until you figure out what really drives you to invest you will just be blindly saving.
Where do you want your investments to take you?
If your answer is “I just want a lot of money” or “I just want to retire and relax” then you are probably going to stay stuck where you are.
Like a ship drifting aimlessly at sea, unless you have a specific reason to invest you will not be successful. After all, you can’t hit what you can’t see.
This is a consumer mindset, not an investing mindset.
So take some time to think about your Investing Purpose.
Are you doing it for your children or grandchildren?
Are you doing it for the freedom to travel?
Are you doing it to leave a legacy, either for your family or for an important cause?
No matter what your purpose for investing is, ultimately it comes down to giving you the freedom to make that purpose a reality.
Visualize It First
You have probably heard the saying that “all great men and women had a vision.” We have imaginations for a reason: before we can make anything, we first have to visualize or imagine it.
This isn’t some new age magic about visualizing something you want and it just appears out of thin air. No, it’s about engaging your mind to find the way to make it happen.
So take a few minutes to do this simple exercise.
Find a quiet place without distractions. That means no phone, no tablet or computer, no TV. Just peace and quiet all by yourself.
Then close your eyes and start to think about where you want to be in the future. What are you doing? What do you “see” in your mind? What do you hear and feel?
If you are on a beach, can you feel the sand and surf between your toes? How warm or cold is it? Is the sun out? Who is with you?
These are just a few examples to stir your imagination.
And be sure to engage your emotions. Don’t just make a grocery list of stuff you want or places you want to go.
Think about how it makes you feel and what you will experience. It is the emotional experience that will burn your purpose into your mind.
And until your Investing Purpose is burned into your mind, it will be just another distraction or wish. It won’t become a reality until you take it seriously.
Write It Down Next
After visualizing your purpose for investing, write it down. It’s best if you write it by hand (your brain remembers things better when you hand write them).
Write down as many details about what you visualized as possible. Write down where you are, who is with you, what you are doing, why you are doing it and how it makes you feel.
And then write down the date when this will happen.
You are making a commitment to yourself and to those that will share in the fruits of your vision.
Don’t worry if what you wrote seems unrealistic. The world is changing more rapidly than ever, so with a clear vision you can make it a reality faster than ever before.
Congratulations for completing the first step in writing your own story!
Now don’t just shove it aside and forget about it. Review what you wrote on a regular basis (daily is best) and continue to visualize what it means to accomplish what you wrote down.
Next comes the fun part. Let’s put what you wrote into action so you can get the Freedom you desire!
